The best placement of frozen food items is in the center with a slight gap between the food and walls. This allows air flow for efficient thermostat operations while it minimizes the empty space. It also places the items into an easily visible, easily accessible position to be taken out quickly. This minimizes the need to keep the door open for long periods.

How to make your freezer more energy efficient in Phoenix:

• Clean out old items and discard anything unrecognizable or burned.
• If your freezer is old, you may need to defrost it to reach clear, clean sides and top. (Although if your freezer is that old, you should consider upgrading to a newer model for a marked improvement in appliance energy efficiency!)
• Restack the frozen items in the center front of the freezer compartment.
• Fill the empty space with one of the fillers described in part 1, remembering to leave a small gap around the sides and top.
• Close the door and leave closed as long as practical; overnight is usually long enough to freeze the new fillers and chill the air in the gaps.
